Early Childhood Education 

The Education Department at Robert Morris University offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Early Childhood Education. This can also be combined with Special Education.

The Early Childhood Education program prepares teacher candidates for rewarding teaching positions, serving the PreK- 4 population (from birth - age 9), in schools, childcare settings, and child focused agencies across the country. Graduates are certified to teach in preschool, kindergarten, and primary classrooms, grades 1-4 in Pennsylvania. The professional core courses, competencies and experiences for the PreK- 4 teacher preparation program develop teachers who are prepared to serve/value our most precious commodity, our children, and their families. Throughout the program RMU’s teacher candidates will develop personal and professional competencies by participating in both theoretical and practical/applied experiences in local, national, and international settings. All teacher candidates complete a set of core experiences in professional education including participation in guided fieldwork.

Note: The Early Childhood Education (PreK-4) and Middle Level Education (4-8) Pennsylvania programs have replaced the previous Pennsylvania Elementary Education (K-6) certification program.  Either of the Early Childhood or Middle Level degree programs can be combined with Special Education (PreK-8) for a dual degree.

Teacher Certification Requirements

In addition to the course requirements, there are a number of other program and certification requirements that each undergraduate education student must fulfill for the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to grant a Pennsylvania Instructional I Teaching Certificate. These include field experiencesclearancesstate testing requirements, applications for candidacy status and then for student teaching, a semester of student teaching, the professional portfolio, and an application for certification.

Academic Advising

Comprehensive, continuous academic advising is crucial for your success as you work your way through the teacher certification program. In order to ensure your success, you are assigned an academic advisor and will meet with him or her at least once per semester from the time you enter Robert Morris University to the time you complete student teaching and complete all degree requirements for graduation.

Admission Requirements

Initial admission to an undergraduate education degree program as a freshman student, or as a transfer student with less than 48 credits, is not a guarantee of formal admission to candidate status in an education program. All education majors must apply for formal admission to candidate status in their degree program following the completion of 48 credits of college-level work. Specific grade point average, course specifications, and other requirements must be met at that time.


This undergraduate degree program is offered at Moon Township Campus only.

Initial certification education students follow the Teacher Education Progress Process for undergraduatespost-baccalaureate students, and transfer students
